Airman Charles R. Baldis - US Army Air Corps

Airman Charles R. Baldis

Husband to my Great Aunt Gerry Montgomery, Great Uncle Chuck fought with the Army for the Liberation of the Philippines.   Despite having developed jungle rot he fought on assuring that the people of the Philippines would regain their freedom.  Although I hadn’t spoken a single word to his daughter Susan since I was two years old, I did not hesitate to call her in an attempt to discover the past.  She informed me that her dad was a tail gunner in a B-24 and now is searching boxes in the attic for more information and photos of her dad’s service for my tribute.  My Grandfather’s sister Gerry died at the very young age of 39.  Chuck remarried yet still attended family picnics and the like speaking volumes regarding his character of a man.  My only recollections of him are from home movies and photographs and of the way in which my grandparents fondly spoke of him.   Uncle Chuck died in 1981.  He is survived by children Bobby, Dennis, and Susan.
